- Jill Jack hadn’t necessarily given up on making music last year, but the Ferndale singer-songwriter says that “I didn’t know if I felt like putting out another record, to be honest.”
“I get bored with the process of going into the studio,” Jack explains. “I’m not a tech head. I’m more on the emotional side of it. I knew if I was going to do something, I wanted it to be totally different than anything I’ve ever done.”
That turned out to be Jack’s seventh release, a CD/DVD project called “Songwriter Sessions” that she recorded last April at the Hartland Music Hall with an 11-piece band that included Nashville, Tenn.-based producer Colin Linden and a corps of some of the metro area’s hottest players and longtime Jack cohorts. Pleased with the results after many perfectionist months of mixing, Jack will be recreating the show with most of the large band, save Linden, this weekend at Callahan’s Music Hall and at subsequent shows on her docket.
“It was an undertaking,” Jack says with a laugh. “It was very stressful in hindsight, but I’m totally happy with it. I can stand behind it. To me, it’s my seventh record. You can’t go backward. You have to top yourself for your own sake, not just for people who are listening.
“That’s where I wanted to be, and I wanted to be happy with it. I am, so it was worth it.”
Jill Jack & Friends perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Callahan’s Music Hall, 2105 South Blvd., Auburn Hills. Tickets are $10. Call (248) 858-9508 or visit www.atcallahans.com.
